Tavern Cozy is a cozy roleplay chat where you bring characters to life. Create your own AI companions, shape their personalities, give them a world to live in, and talk to them — as many characters, personas, and story threads as you like.
This guide walks you through everything the app can do, from your first sign-in to advanced features like JSON character import and memory.
What you can build
Characters — The heart of Tavern. Define a character’s personality, appearance, dialogue style, expressions, and gallery. Create from scratch, import a CharaCard JSON or PNG, or generate one with AI.
Personas — Who you are in the story. Save reusable personas with traits, background, and an avatar, then switch between them per chat.
Lorebooks — Persistent world knowledge. Entries with trigger keys inject context into a chat when keywords come up, so characters remember the world’s rules.
Presets — Save model settings (temperature, prompts, penalties) and reuse them across chats for a consistent voice.
Image generation — Generate artwork with multiple AI models, resolutions, aspect ratios, and high-thinking mode. Browse your history and manage credits.
Groups — Chat with several characters at once in one room.
The basics in three steps
Sign in
Create an account with an email + username, Google, or a passkey. See Signing in for every method.
Make a character
Go to Create → Create Character, fill in the essentials (name, greeting, description), and save. See Characters for every field.
Start a chat
Open a character and press Start chatting. Pick a persona, attach a lorebook or preset if you like, and go.
A note on credits and limits
Chatting and image generation consume credits. Your account starts with a base allowance that refills monthly; you can buy more credit, and some premium models or features require a subscription. See Getting started for the details.
